The Most Romantic Spots in the Buçaco Forest

Buçaco Forest was a place that always accompanied us from the beginning. In our university days, with Joana studying in Coimbra, Buçaco Forest was our choice destination to spend a few hours together.

When we decided to create this blog, we remembered that, so often, those who visit Portugal ignore the beauty of its interior landscapes. And here especially, in the Center of Portugal, Buçaco amazes any visitor.

From the superb architecture of its palace to the natural beauty that surrounds this magical place, Buçaco Forest is a place that calls for romance, relaxation… and a unique photo session!

Today, we’re telling you a bit about the story of this unforgettable place and we leave you with our tips of spots you can’t miss!

Buçaco Palace

In our opinion, the Buçaco Palace deserves a top spot in the list of the most beautiful palaces in Europe. Constructed in the end of the 19th century for the last kings of Portugal, its architecture follows the neomanueline style inspired by some of the most beautiful monuments of Portugal such as the Jerónimos Monastery and the Tower of Belém.

Today, he rises in the Buçaco Forest with its refined look that calls for romance and transports us to a world of fairytales and enchanted stories. If you want to live like kings for a few days, you can spend the night here at the “Palace do Buçaco” hotel, a hotel that took advantage of the refined structure of the palace to create a luxury hotel unlike any other in Portugal.

Sites Not to Miss:

With over 100 hectares, the Buçaco Forest is a treasure chest of idyllic nooks that deserve to be discovered. Whether you visit this magical place for its romantic atmosphere or for its nature trails, the truth is there is a lot to explore in Buçaco Forest. Below, we give you some of our suggestions:

Swan Lake

If there is just one place in Buçaco Forest that looks like it was taken out of a fairytale, it’s this one. With its flower petals floating in the water, the swans dancing and creating soft waves around them, and the green and silent atmosphere all around, the Swan Lake is one of the most romantic and picturesque places in Buçaco Forest.

Cold Fountain

Plenty of fresh fountains and springs spread amid the dense grove of Buçaco Forest (after all, it’s here that the water for Luso and Caldas de Penacova is collected). But if you can only discover one, make it the Cold Fountain. This enchanting place, with its seemingly endless stairway, extends across Vale dos Fetos and unites the two main waterlines of the forest.

Via Sacra

In 1644, in this sacred natural haven, the dean of Coimbra University ordered the construction of the Via Sacra similar to the one in Jerusalem. The trail, which runs for 3km, is marked by 20 chapels that are dedicated to different episodes of the crucifixion of Christ. The walk ends in Cruz Alta, where you can get a stunning view over the forest and the palace.

Carmelites Convent

The Buçaco Forest was originally protected and looked after by the Order of the Discalced Carmelites who ordered the construction of their convent in the Buçaco forest. Even though most of the convent was destroyed with the construction of the palace, you can still visit its cloister, a chapel and the friars old cells.

What’s your favorite place in Portugal? (You know you can’t say Lisbon or Porto!)
